Gay Boss Vs CEO

I called CEO today. I thought I should tell someone and I couldn't get hold of Gay Boss.

CEO is a very old fashioned guy. Before he chose to become a non-executive member he had a large office with dark wooden furniture and a big moose's head mounted on the wall. No joke. Actually it might have been a deer. I'm not too sure. He always insisted on using the board room for all meetings, even if he was only meeting one person. He would sit at the head of the long oak table with the other person sitting at the other end where you literally have to shout to be heard.

He's a sweet man. Slightly sexist, but sweet.

After exchanging Happy New Years with each other I explained the situation. I basically told him that I had consulted a lawyer to be on the safe side and that the contract is currently being rectified. CEO expressed his gratitude and relief; "Well done Elise. Thank you so much for informing me. My God you are a clever girl aren't you?"

We spoke for another few minutes before saying out goodbyes. Before I rang off he said something very odd;

"Elise I want you to do something for me. This is very, very important." (he only ever says "very" twice when he's talking to a woman)

"Sure"

"Don't tell anyone about this contract business. Not even (Gay Boss). This is important."

"...Okay..."

This is ridiculous. How on earth can I keep this to myself? And why? Gay Boss is going to find out that I hired Solicitor when he receives an invoice anyway. Something doesn't seem right about this. What should I do?

Should I tell Gay Boss? He's going to find out sometime and I've always been close to him. I've never really lied to him. (With the exception of the time that I went into him computer and accidentally arranged a date with Alec the Camp Guy. And of course the other harmless lies; i.e. telling him that I'm almost done with a report when I haven't even looked at it, checking his email without asking, taking the odd sickie..)

Or Should I stick with what CEO told me to do? He said it was important... twice!

stick with the CEO.. if gay boss gets suspicious, tell him to talk to CEO about it... you are officially out of the loop then

Stick with the CEO - he obviously has his reasons and he is the CEO for a reason too ;)

I want your job. Regardless of whether the situation is good or bad there is always something exciting happening at your office. Actually scrap that, I want your life. It sounds cool!

So he says "very, very important" like he is talking to a kid? Kind of creepy. I totally know his type! He needed to tell you "why" you shouldn't tell anyone and what he is going to do about it. Your job could be on the line if you do nothing about it and he should realize that. What if he's the one trying to bring down the company while GB is gone?

I would have the lawyer put the bill on his desk now. Or even have him email the bill to him.

You kept copies right?

You're never going to keep that quiet. But good luck trying. x

Rules are rules, you don't tell Gay Boss.

In the end, you look out for #1, which is YOU. CEO is obviously going to be doing some investigating on the QT and does not want anyone to have a heads up so they can cover their tracks. Loose lips, sink ships. Keep mum until the storm blows over. As it stands, you are the ONLY one that is safe right now. Don't let someone else grab onto your life preserver.

Wow, what a pickle!!! OMG, your blog is so funny! I love the names you call people. Um, your current contract situation sounds like the one in the Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella. You might like to have a read of that!!

Hmmm. This is pretty complicated. Don't suppose Gay Boss has something to do with the discrepancy?

I don’t make it a habit to solicit for people to read my blog…but my recent post is concerning a very sad death in Iraq and a very touching story (I did not write it) that I wanted to share with everyone. Stop by when you get a chance.

Hi Elise,

My advise would be not to tell Gay Boss, CEO might suspect it is Gay Boss amending the contracts and if you tell him, your job may be on the line - accessory?

Send the invoice to CEO and if Gay Boss (if he ever comes back to work) questions it, tell him to speak to CEO! After all, he was adamant you didn't tell him, so i wouldn't risk it!

CEO obviously is going to want to get to the bottom of this situation, sounds like he doesn't want you to tell gay boss b/c either he is suspicious of him or is supsicious of someone else that gay boss is friendly with. Either way, keep out of this one, don't tell gay boss.

Personally, I would tell GB the whole deal. If he is going to find out anyway you need to tell the truth before then or any trust he has in you will be gone for good.

Trust once lost is hard to get back.

Hey Elise,

I was in a similar situation in my previous job. My boss, who was a Director of the company was doing some under-table dealings. I noticed some unacceptable discrepancies and mentioned it to the MD, as I was concerned that I would be associated with the underhand dealings. There was a thorough invesitgation, and eventually my boss was dismissed and prosecuted. I believe your CEO is going to do some of his own investigations with this one. I agree with slyde, if gay boss gets suspicios, then simply tell him to talk to CEO. You shouldn't have to be caught in the middle of this one. If gay boss is worth anything, he will respect your actions.

I have read through the comments from others and it looks like you have been given many various options. I wish you all the best, with which ever decision you make. Whatever you do, it will be the right one for you.

Kindest regards ~ Graham xx
